Many ancient accounts of half-bird, half-human beings have been found in various legends and folklore all around the world. Even the ancient people may already have a deep fascination for half animal-half human beings that many of them have been included in ancient mythology and even religion aside from the people's imaginations. Here are some examples of these bird headed beings.
Egypt's Horus
Horus is the Egyptian god of the sky and the son of Osiris, the creator. Horus is always depicted as a human having a head of a falcon. Hours was also considered as the god of the moon and the sun.
Sumerian Gods
Sumer is an ancient region located in Southern Iraq, formerly known as Mesopotamia. The area is also known as the Cradle of civilization where ancient human civilization was said to have first started. There have been a lot of accounts contained in Sumerian history about certain gods and goddesses having the head of birds but with winged human bodies. They were said to rule over human during early times and were said to have come from other planets.
Aztec's Quetzalcoatl
Quetzalcoatl is the name for the feathered serpent god of the Aztecs. He is said to have the feathers of a bird, a human body and a head of a serpent. He was a god revered by the Aztecs. Other Mesoamerican civilizations also have their different versions of Quetzalcoatl. He was Kukulkan to the Mayas and Gukumatz to the Quiche.
Mythological Griffin
The griffin may be an exception to the previous half-bird half-man beings enumerated since this creature is known to be different. The Griffin in certain Greek mythology as well as Egyptian folklore is described as a creature with an eagles head and wings as well as a body of a lion. They are known as the guardians of kings and their treasures.
India's Karura
Hinduism also has its share of half-bird, half-human beings. It has Karura, a mythical creature with a human body but with wings and face of an eagle. Karura is known to be an avatar (incarnation or descent) of the god Vishnu. Other countries also have their own version of Karura. The Tibetans have their Garuda while the Japanese tell of Karua, a fire breathing half-eagle, half-man with golden feathers and magical gems for a crown.
