Chilean mummies hate climate change:
The Chinchorro mummies are at risk of degradation and now experts know why. Through experiments, the team revealed that rising humidity from climate change in the form of fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean is detrimentally affecting the ancient artifacts.

In the far east forests of Russia, a family of amur tigers was caught on camera in a full family, oldest to youngest trek through the snow. The typical images snapped of this endangered cat are of solitary individuals so this family photo is rare and exciting.

Secrets revealed:
Researchers studied 13 individual chameleons (adult male and female as well as juvenile) in hopes of learning the secrets of their color-changing talents. Chameleons have iridophore cells — colorful iridescent cells that reflect light and can be moved closer together or farther apart — and the team was able to predict, using numerical models, the changing colors of the creatures.

Not-so-strange sightings:
Over the last three months, at least seven snowy owls have been sighted in and around New York City. Researchers are taking the opportunity to catch and place trackers on the birds for GPS tracking and research.

Ancient eagle jewelry:
More than a decade ago, ancient bones were recovered from a cave in Croatia. More recent examination of eagle talons from that cave shed light on new discoveries of the capabliities of Neanderthals to think abstractly and plan strategically.
Virtual shipwreck tour:
One of the largest-ever warships — the Japanese battleship Musashi — was recently discovered and virtually toured live on the Internet in March. The team took eight years to research and locate this naval vessel from the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

To the rescue!
A leatherback turtle was released back into the wild in a rare event. It had been discovered stranded on the beach in South Carolina and wildlife officials nursed him back to health before releasing him to the ocean.
Another erupting volcano:
A recent eruption at Chile's Villaricca volcano left the mountainside covered with ash and lava. The explosion drove thousands from their homes to safety on March 3, 2015. A team is and will continue to monitor activity to learn more about volcanoes.
